There is a very simple step by step system for making the best of your Joomla content management. While it may be confusing, especially for beginning Joomla webmasters, to learn how to manage content in Joomla, it should not actually be so.

There is a three-step process for creating and managing content in Joomla that would make website designing very easy.

But first let me introduce you to how content is organized in the Joomla CMS.

Ready? Ok, here we go.

  1. Sections: These are the broadest divisions of content in Joomla. Let's say, for example, that you are designing a website where you post information about or review shoes. Now, you may have "men's shoes", "ladies' shoes" and "kids shoes'.

Each of these will now be a content section in Joomla. So, when you review the latest ladies' shoes, it will be filed under that section of the Joomla website.

But now you know that each of these types of shoes will have other types under it. So, how do you handle that? That brings us to content categories.

  2. Categories: Now, you know that not all men are interested in all types of men's shoes. So, when I visit your website, I may be interested in your reviews about casual men's shoes. Joe may be interested in the tennis shoes. Others may be interested in other types of shoes, etc. So, how do you organize your review content on your Joomla site?

    Here's how:

Break each of the content sections into categories. For example, for the men's shoes, you may have tennis shoes, sneakers, casual shoes, slippers, etc. Each of these sub-divisions is known as a content category in the Joomla Content Management System.

  3. Joomla Articles or Content Pages: Now that you have divided the content sections further into categories, how do you post content or create new pages on your Joomla website?

    Here's how.

Using this shoes review site example, whenever you have a new review, you will post it under the right category. For example, when you want to post a review about the latest tennis shoes (which we may call "ExtraRunners"), you will post it under the tennis shoes category which is a sub-division of the men's shoes section.

This way, you won't be posting content under the wrong content sections or categories.

So, always remember that the content hierarchy in Joomla (from top to bottom) is Sections=>Categories=>Content Items/Pages.

I am assuming that some of you are also visual learners (just like me) . So,here's a video tutorial to show you in graphic detail how content is ranked and managed in Joomla.

Grab some popcorn and enjoy the show...
